For the past several days, we’ve been underneath LunaKai working on something we’ve wanted to get behind us for a LONG time…. her bottom.
And if you've ever owned an older sailboat, you know there is no such thing as “just paint it.”
First came the sanding and prep.
Then we started finding all those little places that needed attention. A patch here. Another spot there. Sand some more. Fair it. Check it. Fix it.
At one point, looking underneath her, I wondered if we were ever going to stop seeing green! 😂
Then came the barrier coat.
Watching that gray slowly cover years of old paint and repairs was one of those moments when you could finally SEE the progress we'd been working so hard for.
Of course, Skip being Skip, he was right there with a brush making sure every little spot was covered.
And apparently checking the paint required a taste test. 🤣
For the record: NO, he did not actually eat the paint. 😂
Then came the moment I'd been waiting for...
BLUE. 💙
That first coat of bottom paint completely changed her.
I stood back at the end of the day and looked at LunaKai and thought:
There she is.
She's certainly not finished. We still have more bottom paint to apply, and there is plenty more work waiting for us before she goes back into the water.
But this feels BIG.
For so long, we've been looking at lists.
Things to repair.
Things to replace.
Things to sand.
Things to paint.
Things that have kept us sitting on land instead of sailing toward the life we're working so hard to create.
Sometimes when you're in the middle of a huge refit, it feels like you're working constantly without actually getting anywhere.
Then you have a day like this.
You walk twenty feet away.
You turn around.
And suddenly you can see it.
We're getting somewhere.
LunaKai is starting to look like a boat getting ready to sail again instead of a boat that's been sitting in a boatyard.
And that feels pretty darn good. 💙
One project at a time.
One coat at a time.
One day closer to putting the water back underneath her.
The dream is still very much alive. ⛵🌊
